Southern Railway to Provide Paid Bedding in Non-AC Sleeper Coaches

Hey learners,

In a significant step toward improving train travel comfort, Southern Railway has announced that from 1 January 2026, passengers traveling in non-AC Sleeper Class coaches will be able to access bedding items such as bedsheets and pillows on a paid rental basis.

Southern Railway to Provide Paid Bedding in Non-AC Sleeper Coaches

Until now, bedding was a facility exclusive to AC-class passengers, especially on long-distance overnight trains. This move is expected to greatly benefit budget travelers who frequently use sleeper-class coaches.

Pricing and Available Bedding Items

Passengers will be able to choose from the following options:

Item Price
Complete Bedroll Set (pillow + pillow cover + bedsheet) ₹50
Bedsheet Only ₹20
Pillow With Cover Only ₹30

The bedroll sets will be freshly washed, sanitized, and sealed before being provided to passengers.

Where Will the Service Be Available?

The initiative will first launch on 10 express trains operated under the Chennai Division. Depending on passenger response and operational feedback, the service may be expanded across more trains and railway divisions in upcoming phases.

Passengers may have the option to:

Availability may vary depending on stock and demand.

Purpose Behind the Initiative

The introduction of paid bedding services aligns with Indian Railways’ broader strategy to:

  • Improve onboard comfort
  • Enhance hygiene standards
  • Generate additional non-fare revenue
  • Modernize passenger experience

The Indian Railways previously tested this model under the NINFRIS (New Innovative Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme), where the response proved positive, paving the way for its permanent rollout.

What This Means for Passengers

For millions of travelers, especially those taking long overnight journeys, carrying pillows and blankets has always been inconvenient. With this change:

  • Passengers can travel lighter
  • Bedding will be available hygienically when required
  • Comfort levels during travel are expected to significantly improve

Important Notes

  • The service is not free and will be provided only on request.
  • Initially limited to selected trains — not yet available across all routes.
  • Bedroll availability is subject to demand and stock capacity.

The decision to provide paid bedding in non-AC sleeper coaches marks a welcome upgrade for India’s railway passengers. Starting January 2026, travelers will have the option to enjoy a more comfortable and hygienic journey without carrying bedding from home — all at an affordable price.
