Hey learners,
Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University (DDU) has witnessed a remarkable shift in student preferences for the academic session 2025-26, as a significant number of applicants have shown interest in more than one subject. According to the university’s latest admission data, a record 1680 students have applied for multiple subjects—up from just 260 applicants last year.

This drastic rise highlights the growing influence of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes flexibility and interdisciplinary learning. Students now have the freedom to choose subjects based on their interests rather than being confined to traditional streams.
One Student Applied for 8 Subjects
Out of the 1680 students:
- 1533 applicants submitted forms for 2 or more subjects.
- 127 students applied for 3 subjects.
- 15 students chose 4 subjects.
- 4 students selected 5 subjects.
- 1 student applied for as many as 8 subjects.
While students are free to apply for multiple subjects, admission will be granted in only one subject depending on the merit and seat availability.
Students Exploring Interdisciplinary Options
The option to apply across different faculties is allowing students to break away from traditional subject choices. Students with a background in arts are exploring science or humanities subjects, while those from the science stream are also showing interest in management or social sciences. This is a direct result of the NEP’s objective to provide a more inclusive and broad-based education.
Expert Insight
Admission in-charge Prof. R.D. Tripathi shared that students have become more aware of the possibilities offered under the NEP. The ability to apply for multiple subjects not only enhances their chances of selection but also aligns with their career goals more effectively.
Moreover, this year’s process has been made more student-friendly and transparent, contributing to the surge in applications. The system also prevents students from being restricted to a single faculty or subject stream.
The rising number of multi-subject applications at DDU is a clear reflection of the changing academic preferences among students, driven by the New Education Policy 2020. With the freedom to explore interdisciplinary education, students are now better positioned to pursue careers aligned with their interests and talents.
